Born in Poland in 1930, Richard Grunke found an early interest in the bow making business. He began his apprenticeship as a bow maker in 1945 with Edwin Herrmann in Schönlind, then completed it in the H.R. Pfretzschner workshop in Markneukirchen between 1946 and 1948. He remained in this workshop until 1950 before moving to Berlin to work for Alfred Leicht. In 1952, he moved to Bubenreuth and joined the Roderich Paesold workshop. In 1975 Richard Grünke set up his own business. In recognition of his work, he was called on to participate on the jury panel for international bow making competitions. In 1996 he founded a new company with his two sons, Klaus and Thomas, called “Richard Grünke & Söhne GmbH”, in which he still plays an active role. 61g.

Rodney has been actively making bows for over 30 years and is a member of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers, where he earned the degree of “Master of Bow Making”. Rodney has produced nearly 1,000 bows and has restored countless numbers of fine bows.

As Co-Director of the Violin Society of America’s Oberlin Bow Restoration Workshop, Rodney has taught many students the fine art of repair and restoration. He has been guest instructor at the North Bennett Street School in Boston and Chicago School of Violin Making, where he is an alumni and member of the board.
Rodney has won numerous awards in international competitions, including the Violin Society of America International Competitions and the Concours International de Paris. Rodney holds the distinction of Hors’ Concours by the VSA.

Rodney has served as president and Bow adjudicator of the Violin Society of America, as well as president of the American Federation of Violin and Bow Makers.
